As often as possible in the warmer months I go out to paint the landscape with a group of really good painters. It’s helpful to have their input and I’ve learned a lot from seeing their different approaches to a scene. They’re also fun to be with. We often paint at the home of one member’s daughter. She has a beautiful house and garden, with a pond and a large field. This is a more intimate little painting of a small barn and shed there. The clouds showed up just in time and I plunked them down without having to fiddle around very much. I’m always a bit conflicted when I go out, torn between trying to capture a sweeping vista or closing in on something smaller–reluctant to close off any option.

Hello Mrs. Doughtie, I’m a friend of Gavin and Jill and found your blog through Jill’s.
I grew up in East Tennessee and what you’ve so beautifully painted here was quite a common sight. I’ve seen dozens of paintings of barns, but as you mention in another post, there is so much variety to the structure and setting that, while familiar, each one is unique. I think that you’ve done a fantastic job with this one, as well as with all of your other paintings.
Also, Gavin has pointed out to me that we share another connection: Will Rice College. He told me that you and your husband were the Will Rice Masters in the early 1990s. I was a student at Will Rice from 1999 to 2003 and absolutely loved my time there. I find it amazing that I continually run into unexpected Rice connections wherever I go.
